The Bright Side of Ike

This past week has been hard on many Katyites, which is an understatement I’m sure to some. But in light of all the various forms of hardship, there seems to be something that says “we will be okay”. Katy was spared the brunt of Hurricane Ike, and we have to look at the bright side. Although some may be without power or phone line, or suffered damage to their homes, overall we weathered the storm. Families have gotten closer, new friendships have been made, and overall, the mood is upbeat. I think we became stronger as a community. The best in people really is coming out, and for that I am grateful.

Glenn Eller Wins Gold in Beijing

Katy's own Glenn Eller recently took home more olympic gold in trap shooting while in Beijing this summer.

The 26-year-old Katy native had a performance to remember, connecting on 190 of 200 targets to win the gold medal for the United States in double trap shooting Tuesday at the Beijing Shooting Range.

After two disappointing Olympic experiences (a 15th-place finish in 2000, when he suffered from food poisoning, and a 17th-place finish in 2004, when he lost focus due to a false-positive drug test), Eller said his goal this time was to get out of his own way.

School district favors suggested measures in education proposal

Because of alternative certification programs, the teaching field is now wide open to college graduates whose majors weren't education. In Texas, those programs will get a closer look when the State Board for Educator Certification hears on July 25 a proposal for modification.

Taylor Graduate Killed in Combat

As most Americans celebrated the nation's freedoms during the weekend, a family with ties to Katy said goodbye to their fallen son.

Marine Staff Sgt. Edgar "Eddie" Heredia, 28, was killed in combat June 28 in the Farah province in western Afghanistan, according to officials from the Department of Defense.

DOD officials released news of the Heredia's death July 2 and he was laid to rest Monday in Houston National Cemetery.

Katy Freeway Project Timeline for Completion

If you live in Katy, you may have gathered that it seems like we are never going to see the end to the 23 mile concrete and steel wasteland otherwise known as the Katy Freeway. According to the the Katy Freeway Public Information team, the completion is near.

The most noteworthy part of this new freeway is the Katy Tollway. It is the first of it’s kind in Texas with “dynamic pricing”, meaning pricing will be based on optimizing the use of the freeway’s capacity, and commuter’s travel patterns will be the single largest variable. The Katy Tollway begins west of SH-6 and ends at the I-10/I-610 interchange. Located in the center portion of the I-10/Katy Freeway, the Tollway consists of two express lanes in each direction operating 7 days a week. The Tollway lanes will be separated from the regular I-10 lanes by 12-foot shoulders and flex-post traffic barriers.
